Custom Built Cage Version 2

Well - the boys sure got big! Over the summer I rebuilt their cage and now they have twice as much space. So lucky rats!

You can still check out the old cage page.

Here's some details on the cage:
  • Frame built out of 2x2 pine lumber and painted
  • Back made from painted peg board (w/o holes)
  • Sides made from Cube storage unit panels. You can get these at places like Walmart. The panels are meant to be assembled inito cubes to use as storage. The ones I got are made by Rubbermaid and the metal is painted.

I used a scroll saw to cut the panels to fit the cage dimensions, painted the cut ends to avoid rust, and attached the panels using wire tacks.

  • Top made from painted peg board (not fastened down)
  • Shelves are 3/4 inch pine painted. The shelves attach to the wire sides of the cage using aluminum brackets. In the home improvement store you can get aluminum stock that is bent at a 90 degree angle. I cut sections of this and used it for the shelf brackets.
  • Trap door in the top that opens up onto the roof
  • Plastic dog kennel tray used as the floor of the cage - easy to remove for cleaning
  • Paint used: Rustoleum water based paint. Two coats makes a nice surface that is easy to clean off. I tried painting with a brush, with a roller, and with spray paint. A small paint roller was the best way to go. I didn't try to paint the insides of the holes in the peg board.
