Pittsburgh Glass Center

In January and February of 2003 I took a flameworking course from the the Pittsburgh Glass Center. I had a lot of fun in the class - and only one minor burn! :) Here's a gallery of many of the pieces I made during the class.

Paul and I attended the Valentine's Day party at the Glass Center and got some photos of an artist doing a Flameworking demo.

The torch we used for working with Moretti glass

Demo of making a bead.

In this demo, a glass bead is being made. The artist melts glass rods in the flame and shapes the molten glass over a steel mandrel. When the bead is finished, it will be placed in the kiln that you see in the background. The kiln will keep the bead hot (about 940 degress Fahrenheit) to anneal it. Then the temperature will be brought down slowly until the bead is cool. This prevents cracks in the bead due to stress as the bead cools.
